In extension we have been given a task to make a informercial for the Malawi. You had to make a combination. I combined a Pestle from the Mortar and Pestle with Hoe. I called it the "Hoe Sharpener". Hope you understand why I combine those two.

Future Aspiration

On Wednesday a group of inspirational people came to our school, to talk to the intermediates about our Future Aspirations. Andrew Patterson the radio dj came as well as Jason Sharma a.k.a Mr. Sharma at T.C (Tamaki College), Constable Fareka a police officer and Arizona Leger Ex head girl from Epsom going to be a journalist. They came to talk about our future, more like a spoken word. We sang the school waiata while they entered the room.

First up was Mr. Sharma. He came and talked about never to copy what our friends do. Jason Sharma told us about when he was in High School. His friends were really good at sports, especially rugby, but all Jason was good at was Maths?  He always wanted to be like them, copy them and do what they do, but he wasn’t good at what they did which was sports. Jason couldn’t catch, run or tackle and he didn’t even like it, so he decided to stay at what hes good at which was Maths. Obviously Jason chose a wise decision and became a Maths teacher when he grew up. His speech was about “Never to copy your friends, because whatever they do and like might not be the things you like and do”

When he had finished Andrew Peterson came up and introduced the next speaker Constable Fareka. He told us a lot about Police and what they do. Jason also talked about who inspired him which was his uncle. His uncle was a police officer in the Cook Islands, thats when Fareka found out that he wanted to be one too. He also told us about his job. Police’s don’t only drive cars, they steer boats and control helicopters to find the criminal. The interesting thing that he said was that Tamaki College people has never been interested to come and join the Police. So no one from the Police is from Tamaki. He said he wasn’t going to talk to us for so long so he handed it over back to Andrew.

Andrew introduced the last guest which was Arizona Leger. This year is her first year of university. Last year Arizona went to Epsom Girls Grammar and she was the head girl. Arizona talked about lot of funny and interest things. She told us that when she was a little girl she always use to talk a lot during class, and she will always get in trouble. But then one day they were choosing the School captains and the teachers choose her. Arizona was so confused and went to ask the teacher “Miss are you sure its me? I think you got the name wrong because I always talk a lot” the teacher answered and said “That’s the point. You talk a lot I know but you’re confident. Most people don’t talk like you, so thats why we choose you.”

Arizona was so surprised, and when she went to college she turned that negative thing which was talking into a positive and became the head girl for Epsom. Now studying to become a journalist. Arizona talked about a lot of things but the most important one was the 5 things. Tahi (one in Maori) do your mahi (work). Lua (two in Samoan) Dr. Zeus's quote “ Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.” Sahn (three in Japanese) Have fun! Four, beat the door meaning: If you sing in the shower or anywhere where no one can see, beat the door and be confident and just show everyone your talent. Five is to Strive to Survive. That was the main things that she talked about, she was fun and confident and made her negative into a gift of talking. Arizona was the last one to talk and it was time for them to leave. So our guitar player Shayne came and we sang our waita “Mihi Mai Ra”.

Echolocation

Q: What is echolocation?How does it work?

Echolocation is how bats navigate during dark to find food.

When you click the sound waves travel and when hits and object it echoes and bounces back.  

How do animals such as bats, whales and dolphins use it?

Bats use their mouth or nose to send out sound waves. When there is an object somewhere close to the bat it will bounce back to their ears. The cool thing is by echolocation the object that bounces back to them, they’ll know what size, shape and texture.

How is Ben Underwood able to ‘see’?

Ben Underwood uses echolocation by doing clicking noises with his mouth. He doesn't use his eyes, he uses his ears. So he locates to places by clicking with his mouth, and when it hits an object it bounces back and he’ll know where to go.
